Meet Amy

I have struggled with the answer when asked, "What do you do?" and it isn't work-related. Ultimately, we settled on that I find things and untangle things. But I also read (a lot), pretend to wake surf, and watch Hallmark films.

The Weekend Away
it was amazing
So so good! Orla and Kate are long-time best friends off on a girls' weekend away. Kate is a bit of a player who is trying to get back at her soon-to-be-ex, causing her to spend frivolously and do drugs and hook-ups. Orla is a new mom ex...

Maybe Next Time
really liked it
Parts were a screaming 5 and parts were like “what?” And just irritated me. It is a Groundhog Day premise about a family of four - the mom is caught up in her own life and missing all that is going on around her with her kids and then he...

As promised, since I brought cards and Melissa (Run with Mel) didn’t, I am giving you her link right now.   It was great fun getting to meet so many amazing bloggers tonight.  I’ll update this post later with links to everyone I met that had cards. (Maybe even a picture or two).

The Last Week of School

We have had a really busy week. But it has been a great week. Here are a slew of pictures to show what our week has been…

Jade had her dance festival.  She had a great time and was pretty funny doing her Aztec dance.  I love that she is not the only one with her tongue out.

Jade had a fantastic gym meet.  She scored a 36.6 and she wasn’t happy with her score on the floor or the vault.

Monday was the day that Utah had their latest snow storm in history.

Tuesday we had dress rehearsals for the Spring Recital.  One of Jade’s costumes was an 80’s costume.

Ivy was a Lady Bug for one of her dances.  Some of the other girls were Bumblebees.  They were very cute little bugs.

Jade had her field day on Wednesday.  I swung by for a minute and took a few pictures.  She had a blast.

Ivy loved watching the other dancers preform on the big screen monitor in the greenroom.  The recital was wonderful.  They all did such a great job.

Today was a really good day.  It started out with a CT scan.  Which never sounds like a good thing, but all was well.  See, about 2 months ago Ivy took a picture of me and it caused some concern.

My face was lopsided and my jaw was bigger on the left than the right.   Today they ruled out a tumor.  They aren’t sure what it is, but as long it isn’t cancer, I’m alright.  Then I got to go to lunch with Melissa.  After lunch I got my hair cut and colored.  I went really dark.  So far Jade doesn’t love it, actually she doesn’t like it at all.  But I think it is kind of fun.

The day ended with the GNO at the Casual Bloggers Conference.  I helped Melissa and her Basa Body friends with their event.  Mel and I handed out the pillows that were donated.  It was so fun getting to meet so many of the bloggers I have admired for quite some time.  One of which was LOLLI from Better in Bulk. I link to her every single Friday for “Give Me You Best Shot” and absolutely adore her.  After meeting her, I adore her even more.

Also, swing by Photo Story Friday with Cecily.

English doesn't always translate well

I’m returning this week to Mama Kat’s workshop and writing about the following prompt…

1.) Describe a time when you had difficulty communicating with someone who speaks a different language than you.

Oh there was that time, when I was walking down the road in Kiev.  This man kept following me and trying to grab me.  If only I would have known how to say “don’t touch me” and “go away” prior to venturing out on a walk.

Then there was that time when I was playing the “I’ve got your nose” game with an adorable little Ukrainian girl.  Suddenly the look on her mother’s face fell in complete shock at what this young american girl was showing her innocent daughter.  Apparently the not-so-universal sign for “I’ve got your nose” translates to the Russian equivalent of the American’s middle finger.

And finally one of my favorites…

We were meeting with a deaf family in Ukraine, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.  By this time, my Russian was coming along.  My Russian sign language was a completely different story.  The little bit of American Sign Language I learned while hanging out with the deaf students during second grade, did not come in handy.  Not handy at all.

We were talking to this sweet family about the importance of studying the scriptures and praying often and that it is something you need to do for the rest of your life.  To help demonstrate our point, we shared a scripture from the Doctrine and Covenants (D&C 10:4) that states we must not run faster or labor harder than we have the strength and means but that we must endure to the end.  Suddenly the mother began to cry.  We asked why she was crying.  She said, “Because I can’t run at all!”  Once we explained that she didn’t have to really run and that it was an example, she calmed down a bit.

When have you been faced with a challenge to communicate in another language?

Play Games and Stay Young - Wordful Wednesday

There are many things that I love about my sweet husband.  But I’ll share with you one of my favorite things.   He LOVES to play with the girls.  He loves to tease them and wrestle with them.  He plays video games with them and board games too.   He and Jade have been playing math games before bed.  But this Saturday he played twister.   Jade loved it, even when he was trying to tickle her and knock her down.  I love the pure joy in both of their faces.

But even more fun than Scott playing twister with Jade, was when Great Grandpa played twister with the girls.  I did just say GREAT Grandpa.  This wonderful man is in his 90’s and I dare say, more fit than both of the girls’ other grandpas.  He fell a few times and jumped right back up, laughing the whole time.

I love that great big smile that he seems to always wear on his sweet weathered face.
