Meet Amy

I have struggled with the answer when asked, "What do you do?" and it isn't work-related. Ultimately, we settled on that I find things and untangle things. But I also read (a lot), pretend to wake surf, and watch Hallmark films.

My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord

New Testament Lesson 2

Of the women in the New Testament, who would you like to meet? – there is Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary and Martha, Elisabeth, Mary to name a few.

What is it about these women that inspires you?

Why are we drawn to righteous people?

I’d like to ask some difficult questions for you to answer, and I’d like you to think for a moment about your answers.

1- What do you do that draws other people to you?

2- What are you sharing about your faith in Christ through your daily activities?

3- Do your children, parents, friends look to you as an example of righteousness?

Now that we’ve done some self-examination, let’s take a moment and share what we can do to make sure we are attracting people to us for the right reasons.

What can we do to be the righteous person others are drawn to?

In Luke 1:5-9 we learn of a couple that did everything that we have answered.

5  ¶There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named aZacharias, of the course of bAbia: and his wife wasof the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

6  And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and aordinances of the Lord blameless.

7  And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was abarren, and they both were now well bstricken in years.

8  And it came to pass, that while he executed the apriest’s office before God in the order of his bcourse,

9  According to the custom of the apriest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

From these 5 verses, what do we know about Zacharias and Elisabeth?

What stands out to me about this couple is the amount of enduring faith that they had.  Their life had not been easy.  We all know someone, or are someone who has struggled to have a child or has been unable to have one.  The pain of this trial is very powerful.  Yet this couple endured the pain and continued to have faith – even though they were “well stricken in years”.

So, I’m curious what you think about this.  Zacharias and Elisabeth prayed for a child for many many years.  My curiosity I’ll break down into two questions…

Part one – When we want something that is a truly righteous desire, how long are we willing to pray for something before we decide that it just must not be right for us or that it just isn’t going to happen?

Part two – How can we ask in a way that we can be in tune with the Holy Ghost and know when we shouldn’t accept the absence of a “positive” answer as the answer?

I look the trials in my life, in my siblings’ lives, in my friends’ lives and I know that there are so many things that we are either asking for help on, asking for answers or asking for a change of situation.  Looking to Zacharias and Elisabeth should prove to all of us that the Lord has a plan and sometimes giving us the answer right when we want it or think we need it may be in order to fulfill his purpose.

Why did God wait so long to answer Zacharias and Elisabeth’s prayer?

In Luke 1:9-13 we can read how Zacharias received the answer to his prayer…

8  And it came to pass, that while he executed the apriest’s office before God in the order of his bcourse,

9  According to the custom of the apriest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10  And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

11  And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12  And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13  But the angel said unto him, aFear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a bson, and thou shalt call his name John.

What would his name have been had the angel Gabriel not told him to name him John? (Zacharias, after the tradition of his father).
What was prophesied about John’s mission? (Luke 1:14-17)

  • John would turn many people to the Lord their God (Luke 1:16)
  • He would turn the hearts oft he fathers to the children (Luke 1:17)
  • He would turn the disobedient to the wisdom of the just (Luke 1:17)
  • He would make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Luke 1:17)

Why was John’s mission so important?

John 1:6-9 says

6  ¶There was a man sent from God, whose name was aJohn.

7  The same came for a awitness, to bear bwitness of the Light, that all men through him might cbelieve.

8  He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9  That was the true aLight, which blighteth cevery man that cometh into the world.

John’s primary focus for his mission was to help others come to Christ.  It is our responsibility, today, to bring people to Christ.

Just as John helped prepare the people for Christ, Elisabeth was there to help Mary.
The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary.  Luke 1:26-33.

Why did the Savior need to be the son of a mortal mother and an immortal Father?

Elder Bruce R. McConkie taught:

“God was his Father, from which Immortal Personage … he inherited the power of immortality, which is the power to live forever; or, having chosen to die, it is the power to rise again in immortality, thereafter to live forever without again seeing corruption. …

“… Mary was his mother, from which mortal woman … he inherited the power of mortality, which is the power to die. …

“It was because of this … intermixture of the divine and the mortal in one person, that our Lord was able to work out the infinite and eternal atonement. Because God was his Father and Mary was his mother, he had power to live or to die, as he chose, and having laid down his life, he had power to take it again, and then, in a way incomprehensible to us, to pass on the effects of that resurrection to all men so that all shall rise from the tomb” (The Promised Messiah [1978], 470–71).

During the conversation that Mary had with Gabriel, she questioned him how it was possible since she had not known a man.  Gabriel answered that in God all things are possible.  I love that he used the pregnancy of Elisabeth, her cousin, as a sign of that God could do all things.

From Mary’s conversation with Gabriel, what do we learn about Mary?

  1. Mary had found favor with God (Luke 1:28, 30).a.   What does it mean to find favor with God?

    b.  To what other sources do some people look for favor?

    c.  How might looking for favor from these other sources make it difficult to find favor with God?

  2. Mary was worthy to have the Lord with her (Luke 1:28).a.   What can we do to be worthy of this blessing?
  3. Mary was humble and submissive to the will of the Lord (Luke 1:38, 48).a.   Why is it important for us to submit to the Lord’s will?

    b.   How can we become more humble and submissive?

  4. Mary rejoiced in her Savior (Luke 1:47).a.   How can we rejoice in the Savior?

As we continue to read the scriptures from today’s lesson, we will read of the testimonies of Elisabeth when she learned of Mary’s pregnancy.  We will also learn more about the character of Joseph and the role that he would play in Christ’s life.  We will learn of his compassion and love for Mary.  While we study them and become more acquainted with them, our own testimonies will be strengthened.

Luke 1:46 reads  “and Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord”

I would like to share my testimony.  I know that Christ is our Savior.  I know that John the Baptist came and fulfilled the prophecies and prepared the way for our Savior.  I am grateful for the example of Elisabeth and Zacharias.  It was not easy for them and yet they walked in the commandments and maintained their faith through their trials.  I know that Mary was the mother of Jesus and that she was most righteous and choice above all other women.  It is my goal to be a more faithful and righteous woman like her.  I pray that my actions will constantly testify of my love for Jesus Christ and His Gospel.  I know I’m not perfect and that there are always things to work on, but I know that God knows me and loves me.

What a Birthday

Ivy is five – and all day she reminded us that it was her birthday and that she is five.  Oh the list of things that she can and will do now that she’s five!  I’m crossing my fingers that her “now that I’m five I’m going to do whatever you ask me to do” really does happen.

We went on a field trip with Jade’s second grade class.

We went to Tokyo for a Teppan dinner.

We opened presents.

We read her book and called it a night.

Happy Birthday Ivy Rose!

Favorite Face of the Year- Birthday Girl

In order to narrow down the search for favorite face of the year, I only looked at photos of my birthday girl.

I really can’t get over that Ivy is FIVE.  It seems like it was only yesterday that we were walking the mall on New Year’s Eve in hopes of Ivy coming a few days early.  Her due date was the 4th of January and we had our fingers crossed that she’d make it in time to save us some taxes.  She had every intention of holding off as close to her due date as possible, but she still wanted to be a little early.  She was born at 10:59 PM the day before she was due.

I still can’t believe that I spent most of her pregnancy on bed rest because she kept threatening to come really early.

So, here is my favorite smile from this year of Ivy.

She is such a character and a poser.  She’s also one of the sweetest little girls you could ever meet.  It amazes me the maturity she shows every single day.  For example, in her bed time prayer the other night, she asked Heavenly Father to “bless Grandpa and Grandma while they drive home because the roads are icy and snowy”.  Ivy is full of compassion and excitement.  Which is such a fun combination.  Her faith in God is so strong, at such a young age.  She looks forward to Sundays so that she can go to church and learn about Jesus, more than anyone I know – grown up or young.

Happy Birthday, Ivy Rose!  We love you.

That Ye Might Believe That Jesus Is the Christ

New Testament – Lesson 1

Last year when we embarked on our studying the Old Testament, I think many of us were less than excited.  The Old Testament is often difficult to understand and there are parts of it when we remind ourselves that it is the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.  There are passages that make us cringe or a bit squeamish.   But there are also stories that help us define our faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

This year, we will spend our time studying the New Testament.  The New Testament if full of wonderful stories of Christ’s life and narrations of the lessons He taught and the sacrifices He made.  It is also filled with the teachings of His disciples following the crucifixion and resurrection.

I am so excited about this year’s lessons.  The New Testament is so much fun to read.  I can honestly say that it is “fun”.   While reading the stories of Christ’s life and the acts of his apostles, you can place yourself amongst those people.  You can imagine how you would have felt and how you would have responded.

I challenge each of us to take some extra time this year to read the New Testament along with our normal scripture study.

There are so many resources available to us to help with our gospel studies.  In fact there are new resources to help our children better understand the stories of the New Testament.  They have made videos telling the stories of the New Testament simple and easy to understand.

In order to introduce the New Testament and how much it influences each of our lives and our testimonies of Jesus Christ, I have asked a few couples to each share their favorite story from the New Testament and how it has strengthened their testimonies.

One of the stories that has strengthened my testimony of our Savior and has helped me at different times is the story when the woman touches the hem of Christ’s garment.

(art by James Christensen)

As Christ walked through a crowd of many people He stopped and asked who had touched the hem of his garment.  His disciples were confused and I think probably a little put off that they were being stopped because someone had touched the hem of Christ’s clothing.  They pointed out that it is crowded where they were and of course someone had touched him, probably many people had touched him.  Christ said that He knew someone had touched him because he felt the power being taken from him.  The woman, who had been sick for 12 years, confessed to having touched Him.  Christ told her that because of her faith she had been made whole.

This story represents to me Christ’s role in our life as well as our role.   I know that Christ knows me and knows my pain and struggles.  I know that as I am faithful and seek after Him with focus and purpose that I will be made whole through my faith in Him.  And I know that just as He felt the power in Him leave as she touched his clothes, He is keenly aware of each one of us and He has felt all of our pain and sorrow.

This year will be filled with wonderful stories that we have all been told our whole lives.  I pray that we will be able to experience them in a new light and be touched by them more deeply or differently than we ever have before.  Our goal, through studying the New Testament, should be to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and to become more aware of His life and mission.
The coming of Christ was often prophesied of in the Old Testament and the Book of Mormon.  In Isaiah we are told many details of what Christ’s mission on earth would be.

Isaiah 61:1-3

1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to  proclaim  liberty to the captives, and the opening of the  prison to them that are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called  trees of  righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Based on these verses, what were some of the aspects of His mission?

“Preach good tidings unto the meek”

“Bind up the brokenhearted”

“Proclaim liberty to the captives”

“Comfort all that mourn”

How did Christ fulfill these prophesies?

In your life, how do you feel these being fulfilled still today?

John the Baptist also prophesied of Christ’s mission.

Luke 3:4–9

4 As it is written in the book of the prophet Esaias; and these are the words, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight.

5 For behold, and lo, he shall come, as it is written in the book of the prophets, to take away the sins of the world, and to bring salvation unto the heathen nations, to gather together those who are lost, who are of the sheepfold of Israel;

6 Yea, even the dispersed and afflicted; and also to prepare the way, and make possible the preaching of the gospel unto the Gentiles;

7 And to be a light unto all who sit in darkness, unto the uttermost parts of the earth; to bring to pass the resurrection from the dead, and to ascend up on high, to dwell on the right hand of the Father,

8 Until the fulness of time, and the law and the testimony shall be sealed, and the keys of the kingdom shall be delivered up again unto the Father;

9 To administer justice unto all; to come down in judgment upon all, and to convince all the ungodly of their ungodly deeds, which they have committed; and all this in the day that he shall come;

What did John the Baptist say about the Savior’s mission?

“Take away the sins of the world”

“Bring salvation unto the heathen nations”

“Gather together those who are lost”

“Make possible the preaching of the gospel unto the Gentiles”

“Be a light unto all who sit in darkness”

“Bring to pass the resurrection from the dead”

“Administer justice unto all”

“Convince all the ungodly of their ungodly deeds”

How did Christ fulfill these prophesies?

In your life, how do you feel these being fulfilled still today?

The Apostle John documented his testimony in the New Testament.

John 1:1–3, 14

1 In the beginning was the gospel preached through the Son. And the gospel was the word, and the word was with the Son, and the Son was with God, and the Son was of God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made which was made.

14 And the same word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

What did John say about the Savior that stands out in these 4 verses?

How has the Savior given you life and light?

How will our studies of the New Testament help your testimony grow?

{Handout} I’d like each of you to take some time this evening and write down your testimony of Jesus Christ and a few things that have strengthened your testimony.  At the end of the year, I’d like us to write down our testimony again a few things from this year that have strengthened your testimony over the year.

In closing, I would like to quote President Thomas S Monson.   He taught:

“We need not visit the Holy Land to feel him close to us. We need not walk by the shores of Galilee or among the Judean hills to walk where Jesus walked.

“In a very real sense, all can walk where Jesus walked when, with his words on our lips, his spirit in our hearts, and his teachings in our lives, we journey through mortality” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1974, 70; or Ensign, May 1974, 48).

I know that the New Testament testifies that Jesus is the Christ – the Anointed.  He is our Savior and through His teachings we can and will be saved.

This is me...

This is me.  It is me on a day off of work when I spent the day playing with my girls and taking pictures of them.  It is my favorite kind of day.  The kind that doesn’t get to happen often enough.

My little sister took this picture and she gave me a copy on Christmas with a note telling me that she ordered me a copy of LightRoom.  I’m very excited about my gift.  Now I won’t have to continue downloading the trial version. 🙂

I rarely love pictures of myself, but this one I really like.  It shows me when I am loving the moment I’m sharing with my family.  It makes me think of a carefree day when I put my email away and ignored all other influences in my life.  When I’m with my family, I don’t have wrinkles between my eyebrows.  If I’m surrounded by family, I can relax and soak in the sun and the happiness.

Going into the new year, I hope I can find more of that carefree happiness that hides my wrinkles and elevates my migraines.  Hopefully there are some positive changes around the corner with my job and I’ll be able to enjoy myself there more than I do now.  It is possible my blogging time will have to be cut back a bit, but there is also a chance I will have more blogging time.  We’ll see which turn my career follows.

Anyway, 2011 is going to have the Amy pictured below a lot more often.
